What to Wear and Bring to Jiu-Jitsu Class

Showing up prepared makes your first classes smoother.

For gi classes

A BJJ gi and belt. If you don't have one yet, ask the academy what to wear for your first visit.

For no-gi classes

A fitted rash guard or t-shirt and athletic shorts or spats without zippers or pockets.

Gear checklist

Water bottle, flip-flops or sandals for walking off the mat, a towel, and a hair tie if needed. A mouthguard is a good idea.

Hygiene essentials

Short, clean fingernails and toenails, clean gear for every class, and no jewelry.

Leave at home

Strong fragrances, shoes on the mat, and any expectations of being perfect on day one.
