What to Expect at Your First BJJ Class in Hyannis
October 12, 2026 · Cristyan BJJ Academy, Hyannis MA
Walking into a martial arts academy for the first time can feel intimidating. Knowing what to expect makes it a lot easier.
Before class
Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early so you can meet the coach and fill out any paperwork. Let the instructor know it's your first time and mention any injuries.
What to wear
If you don't have a gi (the traditional uniform), wear a fitted t-shirt or rash guard and athletic shorts or leggings without zippers or pockets. Remove jewelry and trim your nails.
The warm-up
Expect light jogging, mobility work, and movements specific to jiu-jitsu like shrimping and bridging. Go at your own pace.
Technique instruction
The coach will demonstrate a technique, and you'll practice it with a partner. Experienced students are usually happy to help newcomers.
Sparring
Many academies let beginners watch or do light positional drills before live rolling. You will never be forced into anything you're not ready for.
After class
Drink water, ask questions, and expect to be a little sore the next day. That's normal.
