The BJJ Belt System Explained: White to Black
October 8, 2026 · Cristyan BJJ Academy, Hyannis MA
One of the things that makes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu special is its belt system. Belts are earned slowly, which makes each promotion meaningful.
Adult belts
Adults progress through white, blue, purple, brown, and black. Each belt also has stripes that mark progress along the way.
Kids belts
Children typically move through white, grey, yellow, orange, and green belts before they're old enough for the adult system.
How long does it take?
Timelines vary widely. Reaching blue belt commonly takes a couple of years of consistent training, and black belt often takes a decade or more. Consistency matters far more than talent.
What do coaches look for?
Technical knowledge, the ability to apply techniques against resistance, attitude, and attendance all play a role.
Focus on the journey
The best advice for new students: don't chase belts. Show up, enjoy learning, and the promotions will come.
