Gi vs. No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu: What's the Difference?
October 2, 2026 · Cristyan BJJ Academy, Hyannis MA
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is practiced in two main styles: with the gi (a traditional kimono-style uniform) and without it, called no-gi.
Gi training
The gi gives you collars, sleeves, and pants to grip. That slows the game down, encourages precise technique, and opens up a huge range of chokes and sweeps.
No-gi training
No-gi is done in a rash guard and shorts. With fewer grips, it's faster and more scramble-heavy, and it translates closely to wrestling and MMA.
Which should beginners choose?
Many coaches suggest training both. The gi builds patience and technical detail, while no-gi sharpens speed and athleticism. Skills from one carry over to the other.
Self-defense considerations
In the real world, people wear clothes, so gi training is useful. But attackers might also wear t-shirts, so no-gi matters too.
