Staying Safe on the Mats: BJJ Injury Prevention Tips

September 22, 2026 · Cristyan BJJ Academy, Hyannis MA

Jiu-jitsu is a contact sport, but with good habits it can be practiced safely for a lifetime.

Tap early, tap often

There is no prize for holding out. Tapping is how you learn and how you stay healthy.

Warm up properly

Take warm-ups seriously, especially as you get older or train in cold Cape Cod winters.

Choose your partners wisely

Roll with controlled, experienced training partners while you're new.

Communicate

Tell partners about injuries and ask them to go lighter when needed.

Keep it clean

Wash your gear after every class and shower soon after training to prevent skin infections.

Rest and recover

Sleep, hydration, and rest days are part of training.

Safety is a priority in every class at Cristyan Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Hyannis.
